Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for remarks by President Donald Trump rejecting the idea of regime change in Iran.

“We thought it was important to study the Iranian regime in the time that we had, but it’s not like if we continued the attacks for a few more days, the regime would collapse,” Netanyahu said at Wednesday’s government cabinet meeting.

“Such a coup would have to come from within.”

Nevertheless, Netanyahu noted that Israel still must “deal with the Houthis.” He also acknowledged that Israel must “prevent the regime from recovering in Iran.”

Trump made a similar statement to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday as he was traveling to the NATO conference in The Hague.

The president said bluntly that he does not want to see regime change in Iran at this point: “I’d like to see everything calm down as quickly as possible,” Trump said.

“Regime change takes chaos and ideally we don’t want to see so much chaos.”
