Another Iranian recruitment attempt in Israel has been foiled with the arrest of at least wannabe spies for Tehran.
In the first instance, a foreign citizen with Russian citizenship and an Israeli citizen– both women — arrived Monday in Kfar Chabad equipped with cameras, arousing the suspicion of the town’s Chabad Hasidic residents.
The two women tried to escape, but were caught, with very large sums of money and photographs of Ben Gurion Airport and other sites. Kfar Chabad is located right next to the airport.
The two suspects are believed to have been acting on orders from Iran.
In the second instance, a resident of Tel Aviv was arrested this weekend by the Tel Aviv District Fraud Squad, directed by the Israel Security Aagency (Shin Bet) on suspicion of carrying out missions for the Iranians for several months.
The suspect was asked to photograph the homes of elected officials and military bases, according to a joint statement from Israel Police and the ISA.
As part of a combined operation by the General Security Service and the Tel Aviv District Fraud Division, the 27-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday.
“The agent received thousands in digital currency to document the homes of elected officials, document military bases, and spray graffiti messages against the government,” the two security agencies said.
It was also reported on Monday that last month a Haifa woman was arrested on suspicion of spying on behalf of Iran.
